The grammar stage refers to the elementary years when the mind best absorbs information. Much like language depends on grammar, all future learning depends on the building blocks established during this period. Our 3rd - 6th-grade students will study ELA, Math, History, and Science. See some of the specific topics we'll be covering here: https://www.jaadougco.org/page/grammar-stage-3-6

"I get it. We’re in an age where business is conducted and relationships are formed and sustained through technology. It might seem nonsensical to even question its place in our lives since it is tied to almost everything we do.

But I’m here today to take a step back and give you the classical take."

Teachers at John Adams Academy join with parents in mentoring scholars. They place the development of their scholars foremost in their work. They are well-versed in the subjects they teach and use effective methods of instruction. In turn, scholars are given increasing opportunities to mentor others in and out of the classroom.

We continue our introductions of JAA faculty this week with Tara Rebhan. Ms. Rebhan is thrilled to join JAA as a second-grade teacher, bringing a BA in Psychology from Siena College and an MS in Applied Psychology from the University of Baltimore. She champions the classical model's integrated approach, teaching subjects as an interconnected web rather than isolated disciplines. Outside the classroom, she enjoys skiing, camping, and hiking the Rockies with her family. Join us in welcoming her to the JAA community!

"As students return to the classroom this fall, parents are once again navigating the balance between employing technology for learning and helping their children develop healthy screen time habits. While digital tools have become essential in education, pediatric neurologists warn that excessive screen time—especially unstructured or recreational use—can have long-term negative effects on a developing brain."

Justice. Wisdom. Courage. Charity. Integrity...these and other private moral virtues will be celebrated and encouraged at John Adams Academy. We will also instill in our students an appreciation for and development of public virtue and the subsequent willingness to support the greater good, rather than focus solely on their own needs.

Core Value #2: Public and Private Virtue
John Adams Academy is preparing future leaders and statesmen through principle-based education centered in classics and great mentors. We seek to inspire our scholars to become life-long, self-motivated learners who can identify, understand, seek, and share what is true, noble, and good.
As we lead up to the start of our school year, we'll be sharing some of the specific components of our K-8th grade curriculum!

At John Adams Academy Douglas County, we are taking an intentionally low-tech, high-engagement approach to learning. While we recognize that technology absolutely has a place in our society and education, we need to balance it with human connection between students, teachers, and their peers. We invite you to take a look at this article and others we'll be sharing to provide further insight to the data behind our methodology.

"Previous studies have shown a correlation between the amount of screen time among young children and the presence of developmental delays particularly in communication and problem-solving skills..."

Volunteers at JAA!
Today, we'll continue our introduction of faculty with a spotlight on Dan Green. Most of you know him as our Registrar and Office Manager, but come August, he'll be teaching math in our secondary school.

Mr. Green comes to JAA from Ricks Center for Gifted Children, where he currently teaches Advanced Math in Grades 6-8; and from Golden View Classical Academy, where he both taught in the Algebra sequence in the Upper School, and founded, coached, and taught discrete math to the middle school and high school math teams. He currently leads a grammar school and upper school competition math prep class for PlusMath at the Colorado School of Mines, and teaches and tutors in private practice, with students ranging from 4th grade to Calculus.

Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Green worked in venture capital, investing in chemicals, energy, and materials companies; and worked in engineering and business development at Dow Chemical, Corning, and Arthur D. Little. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from MIT, and an MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School.

Mr. Green is passionate about classical education, and has two daughters who were classically-educated. In his spare time, he can be found doing recreational math and hanging out with his Bernese Mountain Dog.
